KNOXVILLE, TN (Kay Gardner) GEORGE W. BUSH PROTEST REPORT Continued from Previous Page
The roar of a Blackhawk Helicopter overhead told us it was time to assume our positions. We found a nice "grassy knoll" to stand on, but it turned out to be an Indian burial ground so we had to move. Two biker-looking people started cursing at the archeologists who were there trying to protect their sacred site. We hid our signs until we got close to the street - I was sure the bikers were armed and they definitely weren't friendly.
And the next thing I knew, there was W's face pressed against the window, peering out right at us. I'm fairly sure we made eye contact. It shocked me so badly I almost dropped my "Hail to the Thief" and "SHAME" signs. I was supposed to yell "FASCIST" for Janet - but caught up in the moment, and being faced with the man who has turned my life and my country upside down, I could do nothing but stick my tongue out. The caravan then passed, and a few of the media people waved at us.
Soccer mom and some of the locals did double-takes as we walked back to our cars, our signs now proudly waving in the air. I suppose we offended them - but at that point, we didn't care - and we decided we weren't finished with W.

We drove back to Alcoa and stopped in at the local union hall for coffee. The 'speech' was now airing on the local radio - the exact same one he gave yesterday (twice) - and he still couldn't manage to get through it without flubbing it up. Not 20 minutes later, we heard the familiar roar of the helicopters and knew that W couldn't be far behind.
So we piled out onto the sidewalk, reinforced now by the union members with their Gore-Lieberman signs and a few other very angry people whom the local police wouldn't let "cross the road" to get back to their Pennzoil station. I'm sure W was relieved to see that the fringefolks had left Townsend with their nasty signs. Little did he know; we'd just moved. And this time, as his car passed within mere feet of me, I managed to scream at him. A hundred sleepless nights and the outrage of thousands was embodied in that one word: Fascist. The Secret Service pointed and gestured towards us, but I didn't care. None of us did. We had the chance to speak to the man who stole the election - with our signs, our voices and our mere presence.
It was a presence, no matter how small, that said: No matter where you go - we will be there. We will never let an opportunity pass to let you know that you were NOT elected, you are NOT our President; we will never forget and we will not go away. Ever. Get used to us.
