THE MONKEY MAIL CLAIMS:
American Flag Dips to Vietnam, China? Naval Officers Claim Clinton to Change Regulation to Placate Totalitarian Regimes By Geoff Metcalf, WorldNetDaily.com (That should be your first clue)
President Clinton reportedly plans to visit China and Vietnam before the end of his term, and, according to high-ranking Navy officers, the commander in chief will alter long-standing naval regulations to allow the American flag to fly below that of Vietnam when he sails into the communist nation's territorial waters on a U.S. Navy ship. Highly placed Navy sources who spoke on condition of anonymity believe this action on the president's part would further devastate already tenuous Navy morale. As part of his swan song, Clinton reportedly intends to visit two ports aboard Naval vessels. Trip one takes him to the People's Republic of China, which has a regulation that no war ship of any country may enter its territorial waters flying a flag higher than that of the People's Republic of China. According to one Navy source, China and the U.S. have effected a compromise whereby both flags-the U.S. and the PRC- will be flown from U.S. naval vessels at the same height. But visceral outrage is resulting from a proposed change to Navy regulations that would result in the American flag being displayed subordinate to the flag of Vietnam. Navy regulations and tradition prescribe that no country's flag will be displayed in a superior position to the U.S. flag. However, Vietnam's rules reportedly demand that the Vietnamese flag shall always fly in a superior position to any other country's flag. High-ranking naval officers, speaking on condition that their names not be published, say the reason for all the alarm, anger and career-threatening rhetoric is that Clinton allegedly has either ordered, or is about to order, the Secretary of the Navy to amend regulations to permit the Vietnamese flag to be displayed over the U.S. flag.
SPANKING THE MONKEY
On 8-25-2000, WND RETRACTED THEIR OWN STORY (dated 8-23-2000): A spokesman for the U.S. Navy has officially denied allegations, raised in a WorldNetDaily report, that President Clinton will alter long-standing Navy regulations to allow the U.S. flag to be flown in a subordinate position to that of communist Vietnam.
Alan P. Goldstein, Assistant Chief of Information for Technology Integration in the Navy's Office of Information in the Pentagon stated the following [IN WRITING]:
"The Navy is not aware of any planned trips by the President to China or Vietnam aboard a Navy ship. I have also read the article in the Internet publication and can assure you that there are no plans to change the regulations governing the flying of the U.S. flag on U.S. Navy warships. Federal statutes determine Navy Regulations on the flying of the national ensign on Navy vessels, and are not subject to alteration by the Department of the Navy."

Clinton Gets Late-Night Welcome in Vietnam Arshad Mohammed , REUTER'S NEWS SERVICE, 11/16/00
HANOI (Reuters) - Thousands of Vietnamese stayed up late into the night for Bill Clinton's arrival in Hanoi on Thursday as the first serving U.S. president to visit the communist country that humbled and traumatized America a generation ago. Air Force One arrived at Noi Bai International Airport just before 11 p.m. and Clinton descended the steps hand-in-hand with his daughter Chelsea to be met by government ministers and a bouquet of flowers from a woman in a traditional Ao Dai costume. There was little fanfare at the airport, where the flags of the two former enemies fluttered side by side in a gentle night breeze. The official welcoming ceremony is to be held on Friday morning.
-------------------------------
Notice that Clinton was not on a Navy ship, and that the Vietnamese flag was not flown on the same pole with the US flag, nor in a superior position to the US flag.
Can you believe the lies people spread? And how they are almost always right-wing lies? Do you think us progressives should start lying, too? People seem to believe anything. We could get away with it, I guess, but then we would be no better than the republicans. Apparently, WND, the right-wing website, reported that flag accusation (from anonymous sources, of course. Hell, I could be an "anonymous source," too.) on 8-23, and retracted it two days later. Of course, that doesn't stop the Clinton-haters from circulating the lie. They don't even bother to check and see if what they are claiming is correct. The just keep on lying and lying and lying. This is what it has come to for the right wing.
