LONG BEACH (coup2k.com) April 10, 2001 -- The Diva generally stays out of scriptural brawls, but today's report from The Tampa Tribune demands a response, and I ask you to provide it.

Gay students lobbying for discrimination protection in Florida schools got a jolting civics lesson Monday from a lawmaker who welcomed them into his office only to declare: "God... is going to destroy you."
"I don't understand why the gay population is becoming so vocal," state Rep. Allen Trovillion, R- Winter Park, told the Orlando-area high school students. "You are going to cause the downfall of this country that was built on Christian principles."
...Thomas Gentile, 19, sought to give the lawmaker a better sense of what gay students contend with in Florida schools each day.
He described how he was beaten during his freshman year in a Boca Raton high school classroom by assailants who targeted him because of his sexual orientation. School administrators suspended the attackers for one day. They also suspended Gentile, he said, suggesting he provoked the violence by being "too openly gay."
Trovillion was unswayed.
"You have to suffer the consequences of your actions," he told the group.
"The Scripture says that no homosexual will see the Kingdom of God, and I can't put it much straighter than that," Trovillion added.
"God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, and he is going to destroy you and a lot of others."

As a person of no religious faith, I freely admit that I don't have a dog in any biblical fight; but as a human being, I very much have a stake in human rights. Yes, in case you hadn't already heard, let me be the first to tell you: Gay people are human beings, and are entitled to HUMAN RIGHTS.
This isn't the first time we've visited this issue on the BBBR, so let's review:
1. "Hate Crimes Legislation" is a misnomer. A more correct term would be "Domestic Terrorism Legislation."
TERRORISM
Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Law (1996) defines terrorism as "1: the unlawful use or threat of violence esp. against the state or the public as a politically motivated means of attack or coercion, 2: violent and intimidating gang activity."
What this student reported experiencing was an incident of domestic terrorism, designed to achieve a political end -- namely, to keep him from exercising his civil rights, chief among these, his first amendment right to free speech (expression). Yes, saying "I'm gay" qualifies as "speech".
2. Monster Trovillion is guilty of a "buffet faith" infraction. If he is going to deliver a sermon on the wages of sin, why doesn't he do a complete job? Who else besides these gay students is going to hell for their sexuality? Hell is going to be a very crowded place, according to my biblical calculations, which don't even take into account the long list of sins which are either punishable by eternal damnation, or require the death penalty, or were given the death penalty directly by god, according to the bible.
So, before Monster Trovillion delivers his next fire-and-brimstone sermon, it might be an excellent idea for him to take a look at who will be keeping those students company in the afterlife. I daresay, that IF these students are going to hell, they certainly won't lack for company. I ask you to remind him of that as many of your fellow Resistance Fighters already have.
