NATHAN R'S OPEN LETTER TO HILLARY CLINTON
Dear Senator Clinton,
I attended the NOW Pro-Choice Rally in Washington D.C. last weekend with thousands of other women and men who believe in a woman's right to choose. We came from all over the country, including a contingent from my hometown of North Plainfield, NJ, where the NJ Right-To-Life office is. There were many others from Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, Maryland and many other states, including New York.
The anti-Choice minions were out, and obviously better funded that we were as they had 10-foot high, full-color posters of the kind we are all familiar with. What was heartening is that they did not have enough people to hold every poster. What was disheartening was the amount of money they most surely have on their side, while our side was holding hand-made and small cardboard posters that have not changed in design since the 89 rally I attended on the mall.
I know you have been a strong supporter of Choice over the years, and so was disappointed that I could not find your name among the members of Congress who supported the rally. At a time when the right to choose is under a concerted and significant attack from the majority party in all three branches of the federal government, I was shocked that a Senator of your stature, beliefs and positions would be absent in a list of supporters.
I hope that this was simply a staff oversight as the rally was quickly put together, and that when Mr. Bush attempts to place anti-Choice judges on the federal bench you will filibuster or support others' right to filibuster to protect a woman's right to choose.
Mr. Bush's first official action as President was to deny funding to family planning organizations that much as discuss abortion as an option. That was the trumpet call for the anti-choice movement that their man was going to do whatever he could to win. It has also become a rally cry for the people who want to protect American freedoms such as Choice, as we do whatever is in our power to defeat the radical right. I hope we can count on you and our other Democratic Senators to do the same.
Sincerely, Council VP Nathan R. North Plainfield, NJ
TELL BUSH... HOLD THE ARSENIC!
From: Dennis S.
On March 20th Environmental Protection Agency administrator Christie Whitman announced that the Bush administration would withdraw the revised arsenic standard for drinking water issued by the outgoing Clinton administration in January. More than a month passed, however, until the EPA announced an official comment period concerning it's decision. To make matters worse, the agency is giving the public an almost unheard-of absurdly short timeframe (14 days!) to speak out on this critical issue.
The current U.S. arsenic-in-drinking-water standard of 50 parts per billion (ppb) was set in 1942, before health officials knew that arsenic causes cancer. The revised rule would have lowered the acceptable arsenic level to 10 ppb, the same international standard adopted several years ago by the World Health Organization and the European Union.
The National Academy of Sciences has determined that arsenic in water causes bladder, lung and skin cancer, and may cause kidney and liver cancer, birth defects and reproductive problems. Drinking water at the current arsenic standard could easily result in a total cancer risk of one in 100 -- about 10,000 times higher than the risk the EPA would allow for carcinogens in food. Arsenic also harms the central nervous system and heart.

Here you'll find a pre-written message... modify it, or send it as is. In a minute or so, you can send a letter expressing your concern to the EPA, the agency requesting official comments. EPA Administrator Whitman, President Bush, Vice-President Cheney, your Senators and Representative will also receive your message. For more info, please visit NRDC's Arsenic FAQ page:
