SAMPLE LETTER BY JOE F.
Dear Mr. Bush,
To give up a portion of income when heavy in debt is very foolish, yet that is just what you intend to do with your proposed tax cut. Before any tax cuts are enacted, the national debt should be paid down. Even you admit that the economy is slowing down, which would lower expected budget surpluses, but instead of being responsible, you are using that as an excuse to pass the tax cuts. You are very wrong.
Your tax cut proposal would have practically no effect in boosting the economy, but would give massive tax help to the top 1% who would only invest it, not put it back into circulation. The people that energize the economy -- those that must buy bread, milk and diapers -- are the lowest income people, not the richest who benefit the most from your tax cut proposal.
Your tax cut proposal is based on a projected budget surplus created by Bill Clinton's administration, and the responsible fiscal policies they enacted proposed and were able to enact. Should your irresponsible proposal become the law of the land, that surplus may never be realized. With a tax break and failing economy there would be a budget deficit, resulting in more loans and/or loss of services.
The smart thing would be to pay down the national debt, shore up Social Security and Medicare before any tax cuts.
During the presidential campaign you promised prescription drugs for the elderly, a pay-down of the national debt, and a shoring-up of Social Security and Medicare. Now you talks about tax cuts and implementing the very expensive (and likely unworkable) star wars program. This may be "fuzzy math" to you, but Americans can do simple addition. It just doesn't add up.
Sincerely,
Joe F.
