WEST HOLLYWOOD
M.L.K. DAY
RECEPTION/MARCH

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Congresswoman Maxine Waters will be the keynote speaker at "Keeping the Legacy Alive," the City of West Hollywood's annual reception in celebration of the dream and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., today, Monday, Jan. 15, 2001.

Congresswoman Waters will speak at 4 p.m. at the Wyndham Bel Age Hotel, Salon Royale, 1020 North San Vicente Boulevard in West Hollywood. West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore John Heilman will moderate the event. Admission for the event is free, including a buffet. Parking will be available at the Wyndham Bel Age for $3.  For driving directions to the event, click

Congresswoman Waters will address the crowd on the importance of maintaining the legacy of Dr. King, especially during a conservative Presidential administration. Congresswoman Waters has been a longstanding advocate for human rights. She was a leader in the movement to end Apartheid in South Africa and has urged justice for Haitian refugees and the restoration of democracy in Haiti.

Among her legislative accomplishments in landmark affirmative action legislation are opening up state procurement and contracting opportunities to women and minority-owned businesses.

She also won passage of legislation creating a "Center for Women Veterans" within the Department of Veterans Affairs. She is a co-founder of Black Women's Forum, a nonprofit organization of more than 1,200 African American women in the Los Angeles area.

In addition to the speech by Congresswoman Waters, the "Keeping the Legacy Alive" event will feature a viewing of Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech and the presentation of the first annual King Legacy Award. The award will be presented to David Mixner, a Gay rights pioneer and longtime civil rights advocate.

The City of West Hollywood will continue its celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a community candlelight march later in the evening. The march will begin at 6 p.m. at West Hollywood Park, 647 North San Vicente Boulevard. Members of the West Hollywood community will march east down Santa Monica Boulevard to the Pacific Design Center where a gospel choir will perform.  For driving directions to this event, click
