Dear Friends,
I do regret being so late in getting this report to you. After doing 3 protests this week quite frankly I'm---hmm, BUSHED??? Just saying that brings my anger and energy level back up again.
Four of us went to the St Petersburg Pier on Thursday night because Katherine Harris was addressing 150 people at a dinner in the Columbia Restaurant on the fourth floor of the pier. She must have been mighty early because we were there at 7PM and never did get a glimpse of her. Nevertheless we protested down on the entrance to the building with again, many thumbs up from passersby. At around 9PM we started getting tired and the young College student Dave was hungry. So we three mothered him by putting our signs away and accompanying him into the luncheonette where he ordered a Philly Cheesteak while we had a cup of coffee. He only began eating his sandwich when a security guard escorted two policeman over to our table. The police politely gave us the order to leave because management said we must. Explaining that we were peaceful and that the pier is a public place didn't help, so Dave just picked up his sandwich as best he could and we grabbed our coffee and walked.
We all agreed that "you win some and you loose some. This evening was a definite loss since there was no booing, not even once. Jan said, lets cancel Tomorrow's Kate-booing and I agreed. But next morning as I reached the keyboard of this computer, I noticed a couple of messages from people whom I had never received email from before and oh God, they were all going to the....ugh......St Pete Pier. I didn't get the chance to cancel it.
I was there early enough to get a good parking place and moments later, Vivian showed up. She chose a couple of signs from my open trunk full of protest signs but she also wanted to create her own with the poster paper and blue marker she brought, carefully stating Katherine Harris Stole Our Votes". Within minutes Vivian lifted her creation off the trunk of my car and we walked on down the pier. I showed her the spot where we were asked to stay last night and then Barbara joined us. She protested with us once before in Tampa with our orange fringed car caravan honking at FOX News. Soon we were also joined by two more women from St Petersburg and we all shared our knowledge and opinions of Jeb, Katherine, and DumbYa. Two more folks joined us later and then two more, each also leaving at different times.
We did this for about an hour and then it happened---ta da---. She arrived in a Black limo that pulled up in front of the door. Her long skinny legs encased in a surprisingly short skirt reached out for the grounding of the Pier and then our booing began. We went on for about 3 or 4 minutes to the surprise of tourists around us. Kate didn't turn around once to give anyone the satisfaction of seeing disappointment or even any emotion on her reinforced face done by the makeup-artist (Jeb?) or whoever.
After she went in we protested for the rest of the morning, surprised again at how many people agreed with us, and considering this place should have offered her the support of her right wing fans. This is just my 8th protest of Bush and with every one I find the majority agrees with us more and more. If it's true that Katherine is running for Congress next election, and that this was just one more fundraiser for her, then more Kate-booings are in definitely in order. I just wish my friends of Thursday evening could have spent their anger and received the rejuvenation I experienced that Friday morning.
Harris tried to sneak off of the Pier in a different car, one that looked remarkably like the car that Jeb arrived in at Tampa on Wednesday. I had a feeling that Kate was hiding there in the back of that car, so I tried to convince my new friends of this, but they didn't seem to believe it. So I just booed her all by myself as the beige car left the scene. I booed with all my heart for those people who couldn't be there. I booed Katherine Harris for those of us who had to work that day. Later the kind security officer told us that I was right and it truly was Kate in the back seat of that car.
Ah...icing on the cake... It's so good to be right!
ALL Smiles dear Friends,
Suni:)))
