CHIRAC KISSES UP TO THE PRETENDER
"Letter of Congratulations from Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic of France, to President-Elect George W. Bush"
Paris, December 14, 2000
Unofficial translation
Dear Governor Bush,
On behalf of France, and personally, I would like to offer you my warmest congratulations and best wishes to you, your family and aides.
Our two countries have forged a strong and exceptional alliance as result of their history and also our respective national personalities, which has been nurtured by mutual friendship and esteem. We find ourselves together on the important issues, and our dialogue is always productive, as our cooperation to bring peace to Kosovo demonstrated again recently.
I hope that our two countries will continue to shoulder their international responsibilities, in liaison with our principal partners and in the trustful climate that has prevailed in their exchanges until now, and will fully commit to addressing the major challenges of this new millennium.
Knowing your genuine talent for dialogue and for listening, I look forward to working with you to strengthen the understanding between our two countries. Together, we must look to deepening the frank dialogue and close partnership between the two sides of the Atlantic. Together, we will have to build a future of peace, freedom and prosperity for our children.
Please accept, Sir, the expression of my highest consideration.
(handwritten) With best wishes, signed: Jacques Chirac

WRITE FRENCH PRESIDENT JACQUES CHIRAC, DEMAND SUBSTANTIVE/SYMBOLIC ACT
Dear Mr. President,
Not a day passes by without a confirmation that Al Gore got more votes nationally than George W. Bush, and apparently in Florida as well, and that the wrong man is sitting in the Oval Office.
What happened in Florida has considerably harmed democracy in the US, which means democracy is also at risk in other countries.
We respectfully ask you to say clearly, not only to the US people but to the entire world that you are in favor of equal voting rights and in favor of a voting reform. It has come to our ears that until the great General de Gaulle introduced direct universal suffrage, by referendum, on October 28, 1962, the French President was elected (just like our President) by an electoral college made up of elected officials. We would like you to support the introduction of this procedure in our Constitution.
We respectfully ask you to speak clearly in favor of democracy, and say that you firmly believe what Al Gore has been saying during the election, and during the protest and the contest phases of our presidential election:
1) one voter, one vote 2) each vote must be counted
We respectfully ask you to invite Al & Tipper Gore to France, so that the people of the United States and the rest of the world may see and hear your commitment to these values. These values rank among the highest, since they are the basis of a free and fair society. You would honor democracy and honor yourself internationally with such a symbolic gesture -- inviting the Gores before inviting the Bushes.
We call upon you, because France is THE country of human rights, a country which puts freedom, equality and fraternity above all other values. For this reason, your unofficial and unprecedented meeting with George W. Bush last December in Washington D.C. has been a big disappointment to a great number of democracy activists, in the United States and abroad, France included. We fail to understand why you couldn't wait Jan 21st to compromise yourself with a man who not only lost the popular vote, but also the electoral votes in Florida.
Please accept, Sir, the expression of my highest consideration.
Sincerely, Corinne
