Last night, I started thinking about that "Reagan Legacy Project" which the Republicans dreamed up. Diva -- I'll bet that EVERY STATE IN THE UNION has a park or street named "Gore". I know that in the vast majority of cases, they have nothing to do with Al, BUT -- it would be neat if someone started a "Gore Legacy Project" in honor of the Real President's quarter century of public service. (I'll bet the Gores would think it was pretty funny -- I know for a fact that they have a great sense of humour!)
This could be done entirely on the Internet by posting pictures that visitors e-mail or snail-mail in. Imagine -- all 50 states, and countries around the world. Apparently there is even a city called "Gore" in the African nation of Chad! I know for a fact that there is also a Gore Park in my hometown (Hamilton, Ontario).
I would volunteer to do this, but I have no web space at present, and lack the facilities for digitizing photos. So I am passing the idea on to you, to do with as you see fit. There is also a serious side to it -- I don't know about you, but I am getting the distinct feeling that there is a deliberate effort underway to erase Mr. Gore from history. During and after the campaign, his enemies belittled his accomplishments ("he didn't really write that book"; "he lied about his legislative record"; "he never did anything dangerous when he was in the military"; "he didn't care about his constituents in Tennessee and was never around"; "he wasn't serious about the environment and just wanted publicity"). And so on. When I heard that the Bush White House was asking the State Department to remove the US's signature from the Kyoto Protocol (this is not only highly unusual but unnecessary, since it means nothing without the ratification anyway), I suspected that they wanted to change history.
They want us to forget that there ever was such a person as Al Gore. Well, a virtual showcase of "Gore" landmarks would be a gentle reminder that the man served the American people for more than 3 decades, and that he is as real as those streets and parks are.
