Geoff Says Don't Send It,

It's An Overreaction

Some feedback-

I don't think you should send this as written.  You are overreacting.  Not to the situation or the ideology that underpins the Right wing agenda, but rather to this person as a person.  He actually took the time to write a letter which included as much empathy as he is capable of, and of course he can be faulted for wanting to rationalize circumstances so that he can step aside from moral agency (an incredibly powerful concept which tortures me in my own life to a degree that inclines me to forgive rather than chastise).  Nevertheless, the central question in your correspondence is, Do you want this person in your life?

If you do I would say you have to talk to him using what he has chosen to give you. He has principles and a conscience but seems to draw a line at the money.  As you pointed out in your brilliant article about Bartering Democracy, what dollar amount does he ascribe to social justice?  How much of a tax cut makes it alright to commit envirocide?  If you wish to communicate he is going to have to be more than a cipher, a screen on which to project a righteous anger.

If not, screw it. Let him have it.

Sincerely,

Geoff DeWan

Dear Geoff:

Thanks for the feedback.

I felt the same way as you, thinking this person didn't sound like such a "bad guy", until I saw his websites.  Once I did, I felt geared-up for total verbal war...

No, I don't want him in my life; and, yes, I'd like to use him for a punching bag (metaphorically speaking).

Chris Says Send It,

Wake John Doe Up

Dear Diva,

I say send it. The guy needs a wake up call. So many supporters of the Republican party try to disassociate themselves from the worst aspects of their party by saying, "but I'M not like that". That means crap.  Your leaders represent you. If your leaders do something that you disagree with (which this guy appears to do) then decent morality REQUIRES that you make that clear and that you NOT support those whose agenda you find abhorrent.

Keep fighting,

Chris

Dear Chris:

I feel exactly the way you do:

I want to send the e-mail, too.  I just wanted to get feedback, first, to see if anyone thought the argument I made was off-base or over-the-top.

I, of course, don't think it is; but then, I am emotionally very close to the subject matter.

Thanks for your input.  I will decide by the end of today whether or not to send it.  I hope I do...

Keep writing, and keep fighting...

Dear Diva,

One thing I found interesting in this guys most recent response to you: at the same time as he refuses to be lumped in with the intolerant members of his own party, he lumps EVERYONE on the left into a single mass who wants nothing more then to enforce a PC-tax-and-spend regime on his ass.

I call this Limbaughitis: the near-religious belief that everyone on the left is part of a grand conspiracy to make everyone else abject slaves to a certain political ideology.

Yes, there are people on the left who suffer from the same malady. But they don't have ANY access to the airwaves.

Chris

Dear Chris:

That is a dead-on assessment:  the right (who own damn near everything, and now run damn-near everything) are having a big pity-party about how oppressed they are.

Please!

Please, please!

It is to LAUGH.

There are some on the right who know that the whole "liberal media" bulls**t is just that. But a considerable number of them have been saying it for so long that it has become an ingrained part of their psyche. To deny it would require a fundamental shift in the paradigms that control their life. For them it would be better to believe a lie then to admit that they have been fooled into believing a lie.

Great response to his "duck and cover" excuses for his support and promotion of RightWingNut behavior and candidates.  He was trying to "witness" to you about the joys of RightWingNut "freedom".  They are continuing their campaign of mis-information and lies ("We are just plain folks that love freedom and BBQ's!").  They will do and say ANYTHING to divide us, to confuse us, to soften us, to weaken us, to turn us against each other, ANYTHING.  Of course, you saw right through him - go and call him out - He deserves it.

Viva the Diva!

Peace,

Nita in Connecticut

Robert Says Send It,

Give me just a moment to compose myself...there, my eyes aren't blurry anymore.

You write with passion kiddo, and this is a powerful piece. I don't know who your dueling partner is, or what, if any, importance you attach to maintaining contact with him. But I say, having already relived your pain over this truly senseless, and unfortunately all too common "American" tragedy (your words burn off my monitor, the bile and bitterness leaps off the screen - I'm not kidding, I was crying!), I say let 'em have it. Both barrels, to continue the firearms metaphor. He seems to be precariously balanced between good and evil, can your words make a difference? Probably not, based on the company he keeps (peer pressure), but it might be worth a try. So if you feel safe about it, go for it.

Yours, in admiration,

Robert

Fred Says Send It,

But It's Pointless...

And We're in Trouble

Diva,

Excellent response!  Of course you should send it, though it will not do any good.  We, as a nation, have firmly set our feet down the road to totalitarianism, and such a large segment of society accepts it (and the stolen election) without question, that it is extremely unlikely that the Right, now emboldened, will let up.  Expect the 2002 and 2004 elections to be fraught with fraud and tampering; also expect that poorer areas of the nation will still have antiquated voting machinery, EXPECT THAT ABSENTEE BALLOTS IN ALL STATES WILL COME CLOSE TO DOUBLING THEIR TOTALS, AS THEY DID IN FLORIDA.  Also expect that new and more ruthless methods of stuffing the ballot box will be designed and executed in the very light of day.  Forget ever having a National Voter Database, which would work to stop this type of fraud.  The very totalitarian powers that control it's fate have the most to lose by it's implementation.

I am a Jew, and I am virtually certain (given that the American Fascism that's coming won't completely resemble Nazi Fascism) and convinced that it WILL happen here.  Get ready for the future, for the Brave New World.  Never forget (God help me) until people like you and I, (or our descendants) are murdered in our beds, too.  That's coming in the next 40 years: the rise of the American Brownshirt (hasn't happened yet, Thank God).

Fred

Dear Fred:

I share your concerns, but I still have hope, or I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing.

The rightwing seems to have perfected the fracturing of the progressive base, and the pitting of one American against another.  They have also played the "big tent" lie consummately, convincing people that their agenda isn't what it IS.  They've given people "cover" to be conservatives, without having to accept the moral implications of voting that way, and enabling that agenda.

It's a mess, and a nightmare.  Still, I'm not giving up, not for a second.

Keep writing, and keep fighting...

Hugh Sees Through John Doe

-- Completely

Dear Tammy,

I just got to your email of earlier today (actually it was yesterday at this point).   I thought the letter from "xxxx" sounded kind of fake.  If it wasn't, then he seemed like someone who was writing things that he didn't really believe in.   I don't remember all the particulars, but in a couple of places he faintly contradicted himself, and lacked any trace of sincerity in his apologies, and in his positions.  It almost came off like he was making himself up as he went along in order to make one of his points.  Like: "I think everyone should wear a gun around their neck, and the reason that makes sense is because I don't hate gay people, I have daughters, and I hug trees."

Kind of creepy.   Do you think he is for real?

  Fighting on,

  Hugh

Dear Hugh:

You're good!  You pegged him!

I have been to his sites, so I know for a fact that he is NOT for real.  Everything he mentions, from gay rights to McCarthyism, is belied by his sites.  You have to take my word for this, because I am not going to post his URL's and give him any more traffic.

...But I will say this:  On the "editorial" page of his site, the first graphic is a picture of the students at Kent State being fired upon, and the text reads, "STRENGTH OF THE RIGHTEOUS!  Victory at Kent State, May 4, 1970 -- Total War on Leftism."

Take my word for it.  This guy is lying his a** off...

What a shock... NOT!
